The clear sound of a trombone is heard, accompanied by the boisterous conversation and raucous laughter; these are the sounds of roadhouses and honkey tonks from ages past, where hard working folks would gather to drink, dance and listen to music. On this album, you will hear folk songs from all corners of the world blended in the free and happy rhythms of the blues. It is almost as if friends from around the world, have travelled and come together to tell stories and share the songs of their homelands. The free-spirited “El Carretero” is tells of the enchanting nights of Havana. The soothing and melancholy “Going Home” portrays the undulating waves of the Vltava River. “Dounann Kudoki” describes the desolate and magnificent coastline of Hokkaido with unique, psychedelic colors. The Indonesian song “Sing Sing So” transports us to Sumatra and a tropical rainforest set on the edge of a volcanic lake in the silvery light of the moon. Many distant musical scenes, are translated into something beautiful and new, being given a lively blues interpretation.

The American artists who were involved in the recording of the “When The Blues Meet Chinese Folk Music” album, once again gathered Los Angeles under the auspices of producer Ye Yunchuan. Ross Garren also returns and is still composing, together with Nick DePinna, from Macau. Although they have different backgrounds, they have formed a deep friendship in more than ten years of cooperation. He has performed with the King of Blues, BB King, and has won many Grammy Awards. Russell, who played piano on the album, is considered a mentor by these two young composers. He taught at the University of California at Los Angeles. Also appearing is Nick's wife, Hitomi Oba, who demonstrated her superb saxophone performance skills. In addition, she also contributed her own generous and hearty songs to the album with two other famous singers, Chelsea Williams and George Krikes.

The musicians enjoyed performing this song so much that Ye Yunchuan decided to include the spontaneous sounds recorded during the final rehearsal, perfectly capturing the warm feelings and high spirits enjoyed by all present!
The bright sound of the saxophone provides a melodic swing, while the fuzzed-out sound of electric guitar uses a soft, powerful tone alternating the pulse of the deep drums. As the music plays, visions of the vast grassland plateaus, just coming into bloom fills our imagination. And with the flowers, the budding romance between the boys and girls shy starts to bloom.

About the Arranger:
Ross Garren is a pianist, harmonicist, and composer, currently residing in Los Angeles, California. He received his BM from the University of Southern California, where he was named Outstanding Graduate in Composition. He is a member of the duos Garren & Cohan and The Sheriffs of Schroedingham, while also leading his own solo project, Taggart. An active freelance musician, he has been named a Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Fellow, won multiple ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards, and has recorded with artists as diverse as Ben Folds, Kesha, Marco Beltrami, Mark Mancina, Empire of the Sun, Jim Keltner and Austin Wintory. As an educator he is a contributor to bluesharmonica.com, as well as having served on faculty at the Musician's Institute. Ross is a proud endorser of Seydel Harmonicas, Brendan Power Harmonicas, Lone Wolf Blues Co. effects pedals, and Xkey midi controllers.
Nick DePinna studied music at the University of California in Los Angeles under the guidance of James W Newton, Paul Chihara, and David Lefkowitz. As a composer and producer of concert, film, and commercial music, his output is wildly diverse. His creative concert works and large ensemble arrangements are performed with increasing regularity by various professional ensembles and universities across the United States, while at the same time his scores for independent films and commercial music can be heard frequently on many American television networks such as ABC, HBO, National Geographic WILD, Fox Sports, VH-1, and CMT.

The sound of a guitar being lazily strummed can be heard in the distance, and dusk begins to fall. A swinging melody on the piano starts up and the lights begin to flicker on in a ramshackle bar. The music starts to keeps time for the people on the dance floor, embellished their swinging dance steps with syncopated rhythms. The clear sound of a trombone is heard, accompanied by the boisterous conversation and raucous laughter; these are the sounds of roadhouses and honkey tonks from ages past, where hard working folks would gather to drink, dance and listen to music. And, as the mellow seductive sound of the saxophone would suggest, also stir up memories and even romance, fueled by the amber glasses of liquid courage served up by the bucketful!
On this album, you will hear folk songs from all corners of the world blended in the free and happy rhythms of the blues. It is almost as if friends from around the world, have travelled and come together to tell stories and share the songs of their homelands. The free-spirited “El Carretero” is tells of the enchanting nights of Havana. The soothing and melancholy “Going Home” portrays the undulating waves of the Vltava River. “Dounann Kudoki” describes the desolate and magnificent coastline of Hokkaido with unique, psychedelic colors. The Indonesian song “Sing Sing So” transports us to Sumatra and a tropical rainforest set on the edge of a volcanic lake in the silvery light of the moon. Many distant musical scenes, are translated into something beautiful and new, being given a lively blues interpretation.
Following the “When The Blues Meet Chinese Folk Music” album, Rhymoi Music continues its unique musical path and has opened a new musical fantasy where the Blues and classic folk songs from around the world can meet on the same plane. The American artists who were involved in the recording of the “When The Blues Meet Chinese Folk Music” album, once again gathered Los Angeles under the auspices of producer Ye Yunchuan. Ross Garren also returns and is still composing, together with Nick DePinna, from Macau. Although they have different backgrounds, they have formed a deep friendship in more than ten years of cooperation. He has performed with the King of Blues, BB King, and has won many Grammy Awards. Russell, who played piano on the album, is considered a mentor by these two young composers. He taught at the University of California at Los Angeles. Also appearing is Nick's wife, Hitomi Oba, who demonstrated her superb saxophone performance skills. In addition, she also contributed her own generous and hearty songs to the album with two other famous singers, Chelsea Williams and George Krikes.

Originally written in 1847 by Stephen Foster, Oh! Susanna has become one of the most popular American songs of all. According to legend, when the gold rush began in 1848, prospectors from all over the world sang this cheerful song as they headed to all corners of California. As one might expect, a solo harmonica starts the song. A female joins in; her buttermilk rich voice breathing new life into what is surely one of the most famous melodies in the world! The rest of the ensemble joins in transforming and bring this quaint folk melody into the 21st century.

In the 1940s, the Buena Vista Social Club became the most popular gathering place for traditional Cuban musicians. This relaxed and humorous folk song is one of the songs that were popular during that time. Nowadays, the laid back Latin attitude towards life is perfectly matched to the free and casual sounds of blues music. The male singer’s hoarse voice plays up the sometimes roguish humor of the lyrics. The guitars and trombones, swinging in characteristic Latin rhythm provide a chic and romantic Caribbean feeling.

This beautiful song from the Sumatra region of Indonesia originally had the same lyrics as “Sing Sing So”, imitating the sound of paddles when rowing. In the instrumental version included in this album, the sound of the oars and people rafting on the silvery surface of the volcanic lake, enjoy are set in a vibrant tropical rainforest style. The piano plays a bluesy prelude as the saxophone sings its melody in a soft, bright tone. Once again, the evocative sound of the slide guitar lulls us with its sensuous melody, perfectly capturing the essence of the beautiful and slightly sad music.

The meaning of the lyrics: the singer complains about his frustration travelling a long and rambling road.
A more modern tone is heard in this arrangement, with the electric guitar played in a psychedelic/metal style, giving a unique and unexpected color to an ancient tune filled with oriental folk sounds. The upright piano is evokes the chilly wind that gusts off the sea. The female voice sings stoically about the vicissitudes of life, as she wanders far north of the coastline of the strange new place she has traveled. During the Edo period in Japan, visiting troupes of entertainers would parade through town and sing songs and perform their tricks to interest the townspeople to attend their shows. They may have even sung this song.

In 1893, the great Czech national composer Dvorak, was teaching in New York. Far from his home, his thoughts wandered to his distant motherland and family. Inspired both by the folk music of America as well as by the melodies from home he kept close to his heart; he created one of the most beautiful melodies in the world, itself, becoming a new folk song!
The drum sounds low. The piano weaves a tender counterpoint, rippling like the waves of the Vltava River from his home back in Bohemia. The warm harmonies of the piano and the naive familiar sound of the harmonica cannot fail but to touch your heart, and inspire tender memories of your own far away home. The song ends in an atmosphere of gentle melancholy and warm embraces.

These simple tunes have been circulated throughout northwestern part of China for generations. Now, that travel time and the ocean and are heard in Los Angeles, perhaps for the very first time? The musicians enjoyed performing this song so much that Ye Yunchuan decided to include the spontaneous sounds recorded during the final rehearsal, perfectly capturing the warm feelings and high spirits enjoyed by all present!
The bright sound of the saxophone provides a melodic swing, while the fuzzed-out sound of electric guitar uses a soft, powerful tone alternating the pulse of the deep drums. As the music plays, visions of the vast grassland plateaus, just coming into bloom fills our imagination. And with the flowers, the budding romance between the boys and girls shy starts to bloom.

The version that appears on this album, played by American musicians, gives a fresh take on the original sorrowful sentiment of the original song, instead, exchanging it for a more nostalgic mood. The full ensemble comes together, the piano, accordion, sax, to create a satisfying, soothing mood to close out our Bluesy journey through folk songs.

The meaning of the lyrics: a girl lies sleeping under an olive tree and dreams of her first love, which comes to marry her with a bouquet and a ring. However, a sudden northerly wind breaks the branches of the olive tree, awakening the girl and interrupting her sweet dream.
The branches and leaves of the olive tree whispered to the sleeping girl, telling her a romantic sweet story. The scent of wild flower transformed into a beautiful imaginary bouquet. The shining sun is becomes a golden ring that stirs the girl's heart. Together, the piano and electric guitar and percussion beautifully frame and compliment the singer’s voice. The pure and beautiful female voice is surrounded by a rich complex layer of shifting rhythms and harmonies, creating a near hypnotic effect.

The accordion evokes the whisper of the night winds with its continuous vibrato. And what could be more appropriate than the sound of the slide guitar to evoke the gondola riding smoothly atop the gentle waves, as the boatman sings this famous melody. Mount Vesuvius is visible from the shore, and in the moonlight, this nocturnal scene takes on the aspect of a dream!

The soothing male voice, accompanied by guitar, sings a quaint and English-inspired melody. This folk song, which first appeared in the 16th century and spread widely throughout England, uses the rhythm of a traditional court dance. Later generations associated it with King Henry VIII. The trombone, which appeared in the second half, adds a noble tone to the original slightly melancholy feel of the original. The trombone plays the melody in a full expressive tone, while the piano etches a quiet tracery, like the sound of gently crunching snow. The ancient melody for this song has been passed down from the Middle Ages, and originally told a woman who fled her family in pursuit of love, only to be deserted by her feckless lover later. At the songs end, the trombone’s husky voice, the piano’s finally etched liens and the percussion all gradually disappear, leaving only a few sighs as the music fades into silence.

About the Arranger:
Ross Garren is a pianist, harmonicist, and composer, currently residing in Los Angeles, California. He received his BM from the University of Southern California, where he was named Outstanding Graduate in Composition. He is a member of the duos Garren & Cohan and The Sheriffs of Schroedingham, while also leading his own solo project, Taggart. An active freelance musician, he has been named a Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Fellow, won multiple ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards, and has recorded with artists as diverse as Ben Folds, Kesha, Marco Beltrami, Mark Mancina, Empire of the Sun, Jim Keltner and Austin Wintory. As an educator he is a contributor to bluesharmonica.com, as well as having served on faculty at the Musician's Institute. Ross is a proud endorser of Seydel Harmonicas, Brendan Power Harmonicas, Lone Wolf Blues Co. effects pedals, and Xkey midi controllers.
Nick DePinna studied music at the University of California in Los Angeles under the guidance of James W Newton, Paul Chihara, and David Lefkowitz. As a composer and producer of concert, film, and commercial music, his output is wildly diverse. His creative concert works and large ensemble arrangements are performed with increasing regularity by various professional ensembles and universities across the United States, while at the same time his scores for independent films and commercial music can be heard frequently on many American television networks such as ABC, HBO, National Geographic WILD, Fox Sports, VH-1, and CMT.
